Saarloos Wolfdog
Saarloos Wolfdog
Class: Mammal
Order: Carnivores
Family: Canidae
Species: Canis lupus
The prehistoric ancestor of the dog is not the wolf!
Dogs and wolves belong to the same species (Canis lupus), but they descend from a common ancestor — a canid — from which different evolutionary lines developed.
Did you know that...
…it’s a domestic animal!
Despite appearances, the Saarloos Wolfdog is a true domestic dog.
However, it carries the wild gene of the wolf, which explains its shy, cautious, and territorial temperament towards strangers.
It was created by crossing a male German Shepherd with a female Arctic Wolf.
…it’s a shy and gentle animal!
Despite its appearance, it has a tender heart and loves human company.
Yet, it carries the memory of the dark time its wild cousins lived through — the great extinction — which is why it can be wary, suspicious, and territorial with people it doesn’t know.
Respect and understand its shyness: surely you’ve also felt emotions that need time and respect to fade away.
Have you found its wild relative?
How to behave?
❌ Don’t throw things at us!
It may sound strange to say, but please don’t throw stones, clumps of earth, or any other objects you find around…
❌ Don’t climb or hit objects on the fence.
You’re not Arsène Lupin — or a lion tamer! 😄
✅ Be patient!
Don’t shout or move suddenly: if you crouch down quietly, we’ll be the ones to come to you — that’s when we’ll feel safe!
🚫 Don’t feed us without asking.
We follow a special diet inspired by the BARF plan — anything else could make us sick!
✅ If you want to pet us, wait for our two-legged caretakers and do it through the fence without putting your hand inside!
We don’t bite, but we weigh around 50 kg, and in our excitement we might accidentally hurt you.
